In one of The Hague’s most charming districts, Zeeheldenkwartier, a former domestic science school was transformed into 15 stunning town houses, including this stylish loft. The ground floor was kept completely open, allowing Studio Wendy Mahieu to tailor the interior to the client’s unique wishes.
The property boasts a large void which connects the ground floor to the first floor. Its open layout affords a superb view of the other rooms from every angle. For instance, the Flos pendant light, which hangs like a playful object above the void, can be observed from anywhere in the house. Additionally, the living kitchen provides an unparalleled view of both the bedroom and the freestanding bath that is centrally positioned underneath a glass roof. In the evening, this vantage point offers a truly memorable experience, with the opportunity to admire the spectacular starry sky.
Minimalist materials blend with more striking elements, such as the raw wall behind the living kitchen and the distinctive beam structure. The kitchen island, made of a terrazzo-inspired neolith, harmonizes beautifully with the dark wood of the cabinet walls, while the mirrored surface by the pantry enhances the spatial experience. The addition of a sliding wall allows for the room to be easily separated from the adjacent hallway.
In the living room, additional light is provided by three narrow strips of glass. The bespoke fireplace has an elegant design with slender lines that give the element a beautiful layering. The introduction of innovative elements has resulted in a notable refresh of the typical industrial loft atmosphere. This new look aligns perfectly with the unique location, the history of the original building, and the new residents.
